William (Bill) Oliver Swafford III, 78, of Akron, passed away after a long illness.
William is survived by his wife of 53 years, Marchell, whom he met through correspondence while serving in the United States Navy. During his military service, William was awarded the Bronze Star in recognition of his dedication and bravery.
He is also survived by his sister, Elaine Tompkins (Larry), and his brother, Michael Swafford. William was a loving father and grandfather to his sons, Mark Swafford (Melissa), grandson Owen; Johnathan Swafford (June), granddaughters Sloan, Neve, and Noa; Anthony Swafford (Apryl), grandsons A.J. and Ryder; and Jonah Swafford, granddaughters Maddyson Russel (Ryan), great-grandsons Sylas and Atlas, and great-granddaughter Vallee; grandson Hayden Swafford. He is further survived by his daughter, Abigail Maag (Byron), and grandson Nolan Bolser.
William was an accomplished musician who played the trumpet beginning at Norton High School. A lifelong supporter of veterans, Bill was a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and proudly served as a bugler on the honor guard for Veterans Day and Memorial Day ceremonies. He also fulfilled the solemn honor of playing "Taps" at veterans' funerals, a duty he carried out with deep respect and devotion.
