John Gregg Majernik, 69, of North Benton, Ohio, passed away peacefully on August 16, 2026, surrounded by loved ones. He was born October 8, 1956, to George and Martha Majernik. John spent most of his career in golf course management, work that suited his curiosity, his intelligence, and his instinct to share what he knew. He served as superintendent at Bunker Hill Golf Course in Medina and later as golf director at Mill Creek MetroParks. He earned his Certified Golf Course Superintendent (CGCS) designation and served as president of the Northern Ohio Golf Course Superintendents Association in 1993. He went on to become one of the first DryJect franchisees in Ohio, and eventually began a new chapter teaching horticulture at Kent State University. Teaching came naturally to him, and he found real meaning in passing along the knowledge and experience of a lifetime in the field.
To his sons he was Dad, and to his granddaughters he was Grandpa John. A devoted Catholic, John lived his faith in how he treated people. He was willing to help anyone, anywhere, whether family, friend, colleague, student, or complete stranger, and he routinely put their needs ahead of his own. He was an educator not only in the classroom but in every part of his life, and the lessons he shared will live on through the many people he taught.
John is survived by his sons, Matt (Kara) and Phil (Meg); his granddaughters, Ava, August, and Esme; and his sister, Carla, and her son, Dylan. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Martha, and his beloved youngest son, Justin.
