Gary Andrew Yankovich, 79, of Akron, passed away on March 15, 2026, at Summa Health Palliative Care following a series of illnesses. Gary proudly graduated from Garfield High School with the Class of 1966. A few years later, he joined the Air Force and served four years as an Electrical Power Production Specialist (54330/54350), including time overseas during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged from the military on January 15, 1973. During his service, Gary was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Air Force Good Conduct Medal, and Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. After his military service, Gary worked for NCR Corporation for 10 years before the company was sold. He later worked as a custodian at The University of Akron, where he retired after 10 years of service. At the same time, he also worked for Giant Eagle in the produce department for 10 years before retiring. Gary had a deep love for music, animals, wrestling, and fishing. He was kind, thoughtful, soft-spoken, and loved joking around. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Leona; son, Michael of Mogadore; sister, Laurene; brother, Mark; and stepsister, Andria. The family extends their sincere gratitude to the staff at Summa Health for their care and compassion.
